Massimo Ciarcia: The soul of Terratico di Bibbona

Agricultural winery in Bibbona (Livorno), Massimo Ciarcia is one of the most renowned wine producers within the Terratico di Bibbona DOC denomination. His wine range stands out for its personality and strong connection to the territory.

The history and philosophy of Massimo Ciarcia

The area around Bibbona has always been devoted to agriculture, as evidenced by the name of the DOC, “Terratico di Bibbona”, established in 2006, which derives from an ancient word used as early as the early 1500s. “Terratico” meant “rent” of land granted to farming families and paid through a share of the harvest.

Initially, the area was not known for its wines, but everything changed with the emergence of wines from nearby Bolgheri. It soon became clear that the same potential, or even greater, also existed in Bibbona. The climate of the area is uniform, but Bibbona boasts different soils, richer in clay and stone, both essential in giving structure and minerality to the wines.

Today, one of the most renowned interpreters of the denomination is Massimo Ciarcia, whose winery was founded in 1995. Born into one of the small landowning families that populated the town, Massimo has combined the traditions of his homeland with modern techniques. This approach is further developed with the support of wine consultant Leonardo Conti, an expert in Tuscan coastal areas.

On one hand, there is the desire to pursue an authentic project as a life and work goal; on the other, there is the environmental aspect, expressed through an eco-sustainable and ecosystem-respecting approach, both in the vineyard and in the cellar.

The wines in detail

The grape that gave its name to this part of Tuscany is central, but for wines designed for an easy and pleasant first drinking experience, Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo have also been added. The result is a line of well-crafted wines with great personality.

An excellent introduction is the fragrant Vermentino “Le Carraie”, followed by the Rosé and a base red wine.

More structured yet full and smooth are Cappella Rosso (which combines Tuscan grapes with Cabernet Sauvignon) and Mistobosco (a red wine with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese, with a light passage in barriques).

The range is completed by the more complex Poggio Regio, a wine made entirely from Merlot which, with its 12-month aging in barriques, highlights its potential in various international tastings.
